Snow Removal

Hopefully we won't have to call out the army again this winter, but you had to envy their heavy equipment.

In much of Toronto, the City provides mechanical sidewalk snow clearing. But in some parts of Toronto, (mainly the core area), the city is unable to provide this service.

To view a map of the city's snow clearing areas, click here (Adobe Acrobat file - opens in new window)

That's why the city is asking all residents and business owners in those areas to clear the ice and snow from sidewalks adjacent to their properties within 12 hours of a snowfall. Clearing the ice and snow from the sidewalk in front of your home or business will make it safer for everyone. Failure to do so could result in a fine of $105 as per city by-law 530-1999.

If you plan to use salt, please take care to use the proper amount and not use too much. Using alternative products such as clay kitty litter or sand is also a good idea.

If you are a senior or disabled, contact the city and we'll clear your sidewalk for you:
  • In East York, Toronto and York call 416-392-7768
  • in North York call 416-395-6205
  • in Etobicoke, call 416-394-8352
  • in Scarborough call 416-396-7372 or -7373

So take the time to clear the ice and snow from in front of your property and show everyone you're are a good neighbour.
